John Block Obituary

Fitchburg
John W. Block, 80
John William Block, 80, died Thursday January 27 at Fitchburg Health Center following a short illness. John was born July 15,1941 in Manhattan, New York to Harold and Alice (Zeltmann) Block. John came to Fitchburg at a young age and except for a year in West Virginia, his time at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and his military service in the US Army, he remained in Fitchburg most of his life.  He graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1959 and from Northeastern University in 1979, where he achieved a Bachelor of Science degree. During his life John was a member of Charles W. Moore Masonic Lodge and the Data Processing Managers Association.
John loved to read, with thrillers as his favorite. He liked to travel and to explore new places and meet new people. He especially liked road trips. He also had many collections, among them stamps and old radios that he rebuilt, but his greatest interest in life was computers. He worked for many years as a programmer and analyst first at the former Tucker Housewares and later at Allmerica Insurance (now the Hanover Insurance Group), retiring in 2002. In his spare time, he enjoyed rebuilding computers and in trying out new software.
John leaves his wife of 26 years Carol A. Allen-Block, two brothers, Robert Block and his wife Nancy of Lunenburg and M. Kenneth Block of Leominster.  He also leaves his niece, Deborah Fugazzatto and husband Stephen of Tyngsboro and their daughters Emily and Katelyn and his niece Rebecca Block of Leominster and her daughter Elizabeth Leger.
Following cremation, funeral services will be held at a later date.
