Carlos Gabriel Mendez
Landscaper, Family Man, Known to all as a trusting, kind and genuine friend
Carlos Gabriel Mendez, 45, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 after experiencing chest pains for the prior few days.
Carlos moved to Fitchburg in 1994 with his wife and two daughters from Tecoman, Colima, Mexico. Since moving to Fitchburg, Carlos and his wife have also given birth to two sons. Carlos was known to all to be a very hard worker. Carlos worked for Jacobs Landscaping for 15 years and also ran a side landscaping business on weekends. Carlos, affectionately known to his friends and family in Fitchburg as “Mexico”, has left a legacy of generosity, kindness, humor and love.
While raising his family in Fitchburg and creating a life for his loved ones, he always stayed in touch with all of his family and close loved ones from Mexico. Many will always remember Carlos with his bluetooth in his ear because it was very rare he didn’t have someone on the line from Colima sharing stories and love back and forth every single day. Carlos had plans to retire and move back to Colima with his childhood love and wife of 29 years, Patricia. Carlos had recently purchased a home in Colima and was making plans to eventually make the move back to where he was born and raised as a child.
Aside from his profession of landscaping and his love for his family, Carlos loved to fix things. Carlos spent almost every day after work finding ways to help friends and to help people in need that were not as fortunate as him. All that knew him would frequently call, stop by the house or reach out if they ever needed anything. This was because Carlos could always find a way. He enjoyed fixing cars and machines, but he also enjoyed fixing problems. He would do anything with no questions asked for anyone because he strongly believed that is what we are all here to do, help each other and to make things easier for each other. His strong belief in always working hard combined with his caring soul made him the kind and caring person that he was.
Carlos could always turn a sad situation into something happier. He had such a loving and humorous personality and could always brighten up anyone’s day. He strongly believed the most important things in life are family and hard work. Carlos would always be questioned why he worked so much and all that knew him closely knew why he worked as much as he did. He always made sure his family was taken care of first and then with whatever was left he would always give to people in need. He would give his money and would loan his tools and time to all that ever needed. The day before his passing, he reached out to many friends and family to tell them he was feeling better after leaving the hospital. He was also compiling a list of friends and family that he could send money to that he knew needed it more than he did. This is how he lived his life every single day.
Carlos is survived by his wife whom he married when he was 17 years old, Patricia Moctezuma. His daughter Karla, her husband Nick McNamara, and his granddaughter, Mia McNamara. His daughter Perla and his grandson Cristian. His son Jesus Mendez who he was so close to, working with him daily at Jacobs Landscaping and Jesus’ girlfriend Jaraliz Ramos. Also his youngest son, Jonathan, who looked up to his dad with such admiration and love. Carlos is also survived by so many brothers and sisters throughout Massachusetts, California and Mexico. He is also survived by countless friends and loved ones throughout Fitchburg and the surrounding areas. Carlos was predeceased by his mother, Lidia Zepeda-Chaves and his father Jesus Mendez.
Carlos was a man of strong faith, prayed often and frequently talked about religion and the power of God and what God can do for all of us. He strongly believed that God will guide all of us and will take care of him and all of us while he is gone. We as a family ask that anyone who reads this says a prayer for Carlos and his family asking for strength and peace while trying to navigate through these very tough times.
