Walter H. Schrader, 94

Walter Herman Schrader, 94 of Fitchburg, passed away on Sunday September 17, 2017 at Sterling Village.
Walter was born August 28, 1923  to Paul and Anna (Schmidt) Schrader. He graduated from Manchester West High School in 1942 where he played basketball and ran track.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served on the USS William P. Biddle troop transport in the Atlantic. Two invasions  Fedalia, North Africa, and Scoglitti , Sicily. Five invasions in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He came to Fitchburg to work in his father's grocery store, Schrader's Market.
He was married in September, 1947 to his wife of 68 years Norma R. (Cutting) Schrader. He worked for Crocker Burbank paper mill for 30 years.
He enjoyed traveling to many of the ship's reunions with Norma. He was a member of Rollstone Congregational church where he served as president of the Men's club, past president of the Couples Club and was on the committee for Boy Scouts Troop 41. He was a member of Aurora Lodge A.F & A.M. Masonic Lodge in Fitchburg.
Walter is survived by his three children, Dianne Sammet (George) of Westminster, Lois Schrader of Fitchburg and son Jon R. Schrader (Elizabeth) of Kissimmee, FL. Three grandsons, Geoffrey Sammet of Boston, Christopher (Tommi) Sammet of Lunenburg, Jonathan Schrader (Katie) of Montana. One great grandson Jordan Sammet of Lunenburg. Walter was predeceased by his wife Norma and his brother Leonard.
Services and burial with military honors will be private on September 23 2017 at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rollstone Congregational Church 199 Main St. Fitchburg, Ma. 01420.
