Fitchburg – Aliki Katsaros, 91 died peacefully in her sleep, Thursday December 6, at the Caldwell Home in Fitchburg MA four days prior to her 92nd birthday.
Born December 11, 1926 in Lowell Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Taxiarchy Katsaros and Anna Manolopoulou Katsaros and the youngest of their five children. Upon the death of their father in 1929, the family moved to Fitchburg.
Before graduating from Fitchburg High School in 1944, she was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Her life was transformed when, as a student of Marion Rice’s famed Fitchburg dance studio, she was taken to Boston to see the Boston Ballet performance of the Nutcracker.
She continued to study at the studio and later attended the school of The New York City Ballet taught by George Balanchine. There, she appeared in the chorus of a number of the New York City Ballet productions.
Upon graduation she lived briefly in California, returning to Fitchburg to become secretary of the Fitchburg Art Museum, a position she held for almost thirty yeas. During this period, she taught ballet both in Fitchburg and Gardner, and maintained a lifelong devotion to the arts. She traveled to Russia and to Egypt and often visited family in Greece.
She was pre-deceased by her brother John, of Fitchburg (2010), William of Santa Rosa, California, (1997) and Nicholas, who while serving in the Naval Air Corps aboard the US Ticonderoga, was killed in a plane crash during the war (1944). A sister, Penelope, died in infancy. She is survived by a nephew, William Katsaros of Santa Rosa California, and cousins, Diana Forbes, Florence Kowalchuk, Daniel Mann, Eugenia Mann, Joan Debbie Mann, and Daphne Zachary.
